I live in Eastern Montana..Zone 3/4. Do you think they'd grow here? I'd love to try some, a neighbor graciously donated some butterfly weed last year, and we already had 2 monarchs .

Plants for a very wet area |

Our vegie garden has a spot where 3 other backyards converge and it is constantly soaking wet from the various sprinkler systems. Is there a plant(s) that would do well in such a location? It doesn't need to be a vegie. We use garden boxes because of limited space. Thank you.

Clematis problems |

Some of my clematis develop brown on the leaf margins each year and the leaf slowly completely turns brown. There are 2 varieties and one is pruned totally back to 4-6 inches each year and the other is a Nellie Mosier which is just shaped up in the spring. The new growth on each is fine and they bloom beautifully in the late spring. After blooming the brown edges start. I live in zone 5-6 and the summers can get really hot and dry. All of the plants are watered totally by a drip system (no overhead watering) and one grows on an obelisk under a light colored solar screen and the other on the side of a shed that only gets morning sun. We have had a lot of wind this year but both of these plants are somewhat protected from that. Any ideas? Would a picture of this condition help?

Astrantia |

I searched for and planted Astrantia (rubra) after seeing an article about it in Garden Gate some years back. It's wonderful. I read that deadheading will encourage rebloom. Where do I deadhead on the plant. I have tried tops, down to the first leaf, and down to the base of the flowering stem. I have yet to get rebloom (after 3 years of trying). What am I doing wrong? Is it my timing? I deadhead when some of the flowers begin to fade and when most have faded. Still no rebloom.

We had a weird very wet spring/summer in Eastern WA. this year. It is July 26th today and I can count the nights it has gotten over 50 degrees at night on one hand. My question is I bought some Calla Lillys at a mark-down sale and am wondering even though they will not have time to bloom will it make them stronger or weaker if I put them in the soil for whatever is left of the summer? Will they hold till next year without sprouting or blooming in the package they came in?

Question about shadey areas |

After 20+ years in our SE Wisconsin home, and having planted 30+ trees in our 1/4 acre lot, we now have a lot of shadey areas and are in need of suggestions as to what to plant in the beds in our lot. We have various hostas, which are nice, but do not offer much in the way of heigth. Are there any "shrubs" or tall grasses that do well in shade? Or are there any other suggestions you can offer?
