We obtained a small aspargus patch when we bought our house. It is pretty established, 5 + years, maybe. There are a few very skinny stalks coming up that I think are first year growth, possibly coming up from seed?? I've read not to cut these, let them go to seed to establish the roots. My other half wants to cut them. Mostly because they make the area look 'messy'. (give me a break) Thoughts??

Have been trying to get rid of a weed that grows to about 3 ft tall, has stems like rhubarb but thinner. The leaves are long and narrow, flowers nondescript, plant turns brown in the fall and lasts all winter. It has a long white tap root. Thanks for suggestions.

Mainly you just want the roots to be spread out fairly evenly. Whether they're flat or angled somewhat downward shouldn't make that big a difference. The plant will be growing new roots anyway! However, you should definitely wait until next year until to do any harvesting, and then harvest very sparingly for the first 3 years. Home grown asparagus is a joy to have. Enjoy yours!

I have sunflower seeds that sprout under my bird feeder. I just mow them down whenever I mow the lawn. It seems to do the trick.

I did the same mistake ten years ago. I sprayed Roundup. My gardening books didn't tell how much invasive it is. Whatever, I've dug up as much as I could and took help from others.

We've just turned our front yard into a drought tolerant garden; however, we need to figure out how much and how often to water it especially until it gets established. Conditions: zone 8b with full sun. We have an in-ground automatic irrigation system. Any recomendations?

We think, all signs point in that direction. That we have an infestation of mole crickets, when our grass came out of domancy after the winter about 1/3 was dead. There was no indication of fungas. We've treated twice now for the pesky critters but I'm trying to find out with centipede grass, without replacing the sod completely, what is the best method for getting the grass to grow again. We live on the coastal SC/GA border in zone 8.
