Clematis

  Re: (0...)
I have a clematis vine entering it's 3rd season. It is growing around my mailbox on a 6 ft x 3 ft trellis. It is beginning to "escape" the trellis. Would it be better for me to trim the escaping shoots to contain it? Would that make it bushier? Or should I build onto my trellis to make it taller?

What 'group' is your clematis in? The pruning of your plant depends on when it blooms. There are 3 groups; some are pruned within 6 inches of the ground each year, some you only trim back and shape up. Also each clematis grows to a different height; some only to 5-6 feet and some to 10-12 feet. What is the name of your plant?

Personally, I don't like clematis. I prefer more exotic plants. Not long ago I was in Vietnam (what an overcrowded country https://populationstat.com/vietnam/) and I saw there so many interesting plants! They are quite difficult to grow but it's worth it.
