      #5378 - 10/12/02 03:38 PM

I want to put fall leaves in my garden this year, and I can't remember what type or number of fertilizer I put over them to thelp them break down by spring.

Depends more on which tree leaves you have and the size of the leaves. Whole leaves will simply take longer since what digests them, the pillbugs, sowbugs, centipededs, millipedes, ants, and those others have very small mouths that can't quite get around whole leaves, and the soil bacteria and earthworms have even smaller mouth parts. So shredded is better and maybe a bit of nitrogen will help, source would be stuff like blood meal, cattle or poultry manure, etc., that the bacteria would need to make the protein that is most of their bodies and provides the energy to digest the carbon that is what leaves are mostly.
